This is an important recovery event since the population of the species had dropped to very low numbers.

Yesterday
Judging from the scale and location of reports, and the numbers recorded from colleagues on the south coast, it appears that the majority of this airborne population ended up on the south coast of NSW. This is not unprecedented. It is still not clear whether these individuals ever find their way back to the aestivation sites in the mountain tops of the Dividing Range. Anyway it represents a big recovery of the Bogong Moth population following favourable breeding conditons in the inland and that the decision to nominate it as a threatened species in the Red Book were based on a poor understanding of its population dynamics. PS I only recorded one individual to light at my home south of Queanbeyan on that night.
