User's notes
Personal observation through thermal scope: 150 per minute passing over 30m wide east/west line above my house, flying at about 100m per minute.
Very rough calculation of total moth numbers:
BOM weather radar cloud of moths 250km x 700km.
1,250,000 per minute over 250km east/west line.
70,000 lines 100m apart in 700km.
4,900,000,000 moths.

OK. we will have to ake your word for it! Are you an expert in mapping Bogong Moths flight patterns in this manner?

In our Watson neighbourhood, there were a lot of moths actively flying around at about rooftop level (10-20m) after sunset on 25 September. Their size, flight behaviour and abundance suggested to me that they were Bogong moths.

My estimation of 5 billion is for the full number flying at night between the Queensland border and the Snowy Mountains, since the density is so great they are showing up on the BOM radar. It is only a very very rough estimate based on my 5 minute observation at a single location
