The first and final images provide some detail of the interface between the cockroach’s compound eyes and its antennae. The images show that the cockroach’s head may have changed shape as it evolved over time, flattening out and elongating to fit beneath the protecting exoskeleton. The location of each antenna’s base appears to have moved across the face as a consequence of the evolving head shape, causing the compound eyes to take up a teardrop shape, which can be seen in detail the final image.
