User's notes

The images appear to show the same Praying Mantis recorded the previous day in sighting 4728634. (This is evidenced by obvious markings on the right wing). The mantis had left the area and returned to an adjacent location the next day. The Praying Mantis is a female and the images show a residual white foam like material around her cerci (fourth image), the small, sensory appendages at the very tip of her abdomen. It appears that during the intervening day she had secreted an ootheca somewhere and laid her eggs. (An ootheca is the protective foam like egg case within which a female mantis can deposit in excess of 400 eggs. These can be seen under NatureMapr’s Mantidae - egg case (family) (Egg case of praying mantis) expert verified sightings and observations - Canberra & Southern Tablelands ). The final image shows the mantis’ spiked raptorial leg with which it catches and holds its prey. The spiked tibia has a thin, delicate tarsus or foreleg protruding from it which the mantis uses for walking. The image shows how the tarsus is attached to the side of the tibia by a small, curved section and not to its end. This is due to the very large spike at the end of the tibia being in the way.
