User's notes

The black pupil-like spots in the compound eyes are ‘pseudopupils.’ They occur where the observer’s viewing angle is directly along the optical axis of the compound eye lenses (ommatidia) and all incident light is being absorbed rather than some being reflected back to the observer. The pseudopupils move across the compound eyes as the observer’s viewing angle moves and consequently, are of value in research of insect vision.
