I agree with you Stuart that it certainly isn’t atypical subpura. Given the shape, size and lack of a vertebral mark the only thing I can think it may be is a patternless Castiarina balteata (which I think it would match pretty much spot on). Alternatively it may be undescribed. It would be helpful to get a few specimens collected for ANIC.

I concur with MarkH's comments. This is a difficult one. It is unlikely to be Castiarina subpura as the elytral apices and the slightly raised elytral costae look different to typical subpura. A Mark H suggests, it may be a form of Castiarina balteata, which certainly does have forms without the dark foreground elytral markings specimens otherwise typically have. I don't think it matches the little-known similar-looking species called Castiarina humilis which has elytra that are a brown colour (in life??) and with more costate (i.e. raised 'ribs' longitudinally along the length of each elytron) elytra. Try to collect a series of specimens and donate them to both the ANIC in Canberra and to the Entomology Department at the Australian Museum in Sydney, where they are at least in public ownership, but where they are likely to remain un-investigated for years or decades. Ideally some live-caught specimens should also be immersed in 100% pure alcohol in suitable brand new vials for such and donated thereto, for DNA analysis purposes by some future researcher ( I don't think Dr Peter Lang of Adelaide is doing any more DNA work on Castiarina) . Of course, as always, I would be most happy to receive a couple of live specimens to also photograph alive, and to compare with specimens of its congeners that I hold, so I can give a definitive opinion as to whether it is a described species or an undescribed species within days rather than in years or decades. Likewise a species in Castiarina that was found last season in the NSW southern highlands that looks similar to Castiarina sexplagiata but seem to be different enough to warrant investigation (now, not in yet more years, or decades time!), as a year has gone by already since they were photographed alive in-situ - and no specimens were collected! I am on Facebook as 'Allen Sundholm' and can readily be contacted either there or by Facebook Messenger. Cheers, Allen Michael Sundholm OAM.

Yes, most likely Castiarina balteata, so I will concur with MarkH. Would not hurt to see actual specimens though. Cheers!
