Spotted two of these, each lying in their own flower with their back to the flower's cup. They were not doing anything - looked like they may be waiting for suitable prey to drop by?

They are bees! I would never have guessed that. They looked so much like wasps to me. I clearly have much to learn in that area... Thanks for the identification, they do look a lot like the ones in the photos shown for this species.
I'm not sure now what they were doing in the flowers, maybe keeping warm? I noticed one in a flower this morning too. I see them only early when it's cool outside, they are gone by the time the sun is higher up.
