User's notes

The first image is a close up showing the Crane Fly’s compound eye, antennae, its snout-like proboscis and its sensory maxillary palps. The latter finger-like structures are used for sensing the Crane Fly’s environment. In the fourth image the Crane Fly’s club-like halteres can be seen. These are hind wings that have evolved to act as gyroscopes to stabilise flight. A close look at the images also shows the spiracles through which air enters the Crane Fly’s body.
