User's notes

Red-stemmed plant that was very common on roadside verge from Boorowa through to Murrumbateman. Had small green fruits which had a milky secretion. Almost no leaves left on them. Interested in what they are as there are so many of them and they make a distinctive patchy red grouping on the road verge for many kilometres.

I'm not sure it is Potentilla recta. The leaves have only the one lobe from what I can see (or can the sulprur cinquefoil also have just single lobed-leaves? The fruits are 3-lobed, the leaves are a bit hairy, and the now drying reddish stems are quite stiff and almost woody, if that helps . I'll see if I can add a couple more photos and I'm not saying you aren't right, as my knowledge is limited!

Not Potentilla recta, which is indeed sometimes abundant along roadsides, but has palmate leaves. A milky secretion sounds more like a family such as Euphorbiaceae or Apocynaceae, rather than Rosaceae ( which is where Potentilla belongs ).

Yes it is also along Hume Highway from Yass to Gundagai - not sure how invasive they are away from the roadside, but are heavy seeders and hard to get rid of once established

Many thanks Michael, Jane and TapirLord for the info. Definitely matches the other photos of David's Spurge so looks like a goer. Great to know what it is. Regards, Paul
