User's notes
Possibly a Cowboy beetle (Chondropyga dorsalis). I have not noticed this type in the garden before this. The attached photo was taken with the subject perched on a Dahlia to make it easier to photograph but it was found on the paving near my garden tap. It was lethargic and, while it wriggled a bit when picked up, did not attempt to fly off.
