There is a similar species called Castiarina mimus which has less black on the pronotum and the orange colour more reddish so watch out for that one as well.
Can someone please check the spelling of pertii… I’m sure it is pertyi however I don’t have access to Barkers book until tonight. Pertii just looks wrong ..
This is Castiarina mima (Castiarina mimus being a junior synonym, at least according to the Atlas of Living Australia website, abbreviation ALA). In some areas, e.g. the central hughlands of NSW, Castiarina mima has variations where the metallic green on the elytra is broken up into bands or further reduced, but this particular pertii-like form is typical for the species where encountered near Sydney. The name Castiarina mima needs to be added to the species list for this region please. Readily distinguished from Castiarina pertii (spelling also as per ALA, which does not mention the name spelt as pertyi as stated in Shelley Barker's book on Castiarina, and likely because the authors of this species, Gory & Laporte, spelt it as 'pertii' in their description of the species) by, as MarkH mentioned, the distinctive orange or orange-red pronotum, as compared to the always-yellow pronotun in Castiarina pertii. Also, the male genitalia are distinctive in each of these two closely-related species (see Shelley Barker's aforementioned book on Castiarina). Cheers, Allen M. Sundholm.
Allen, if the change in spelling hasn’t been published in a recognised paper then it remains as per Barker. Are you aware of any scientific paper changing the name ? If not then ALA is incorrect.
