Closest I can put this to is Castiarina harrisoni, but harrisoni is one of the larger Casts but this seems to be quite small, and the elytral.pattern is atypical. Hard to be sure in this case without shots looking straight down. If not harrisoni then it may be undescribed!!!
@AlisonMilton I'm now realising that I also should try to get some shots with the phone if that allows me to get a straight down shot, as it appears that any angle can make it hard to be absolutely sure for some of these.
It isn’t harrisoni based on pattern and size. It’s quite unusual and, as Allen has said, may prove to get a new species. It would be fantastic if someone can collect a few specimens and deposit them in ANIC.
@MarkH - for collecting for that purpose, what do we need? And who should we contact to arrange? Do we need to keep them alive? I have so many questions about collecting... ;-)
Just put it in a bottle or plastic container with air holes the take it to ANIC with information on location, date, collector, and any data on what plant species it was found on.
@KorinneM Could I come with you? I should have a photo of that beetle as well as I thought we photographed all the same ones. Going back through my photos to check as a few looked so alike.
@MarkH - @AlisonMilton and I went out there again yesterday and looked through probably 50-100 plants. Less jewel beetles than last time and no sign of this one.
