Yes Hydrocotyle rather than Ranunculus, not just leaf but also habit. Uncertain about ID. For H. sibthorpioides, I expect to see ring of hairs under the lamina.
Flowers and fruit, ideally: but these occur very rarely: plus being tiny, they are hard to see, so hard to photograph effectively. Check through photos in CNM to see what to look for (example 4248399). This makes IDs reliant on vegetative features, plus habitat, and familiarity. Some species are easier than others. In the absence of flowers and fruits, then I consider: Leaf shape, margin and degree of indentation. Leaf surfaces (hairs ? ): Leaf colour (upper v lower surface). petiole (? hairy) and detail of where petiole meets lamina: plus habitat - and location.
But Hydrocotyle leaves are variable, so ID can be challenging even with great photographs.
Thanks Jane. Your example sighting is particularly helpful. Again being in the right place and the right time to get flowers & fruit are the key factors. Hopefully I will be next time!?
