I often found this moth in SEQ but Eublemma anachoresis is not reported to be be near ACT according to LBH and BOLD - perhaps blown in by the winds last week. Just to confuse matters it is named as Eublemma accedens on iNat and the most southern observation location there is Taree.
A new species for NatureMapr and for Naturemapr's Canberra Southern Tablelands region if and when confirmed. I've entered it as E. anachoresis given our agreed policy to conform with those recognized species as listed by the Australian Faunal Directory (AFD ). I note BOLD 4 lists both species but does not show E. accedens as occuring in Australia. I also note the text of the entry for E. accidens on BOLD 4 seems to confuse the two by citing the species being desctibed as 'E. anachoresis'. An interesting siting for the ACT. Great photo!
Going back through old photos, I was told by the late Vic Fazio in 2016 "taxonomic split ... E. anachoresis now describes a species restricted to Africa. That of Indo-Australasia is E. accedens"
Thanks for recording that conversation so we have a record of it. But until the AFD and the ALA recognise E. accidens (after all the ALA is the destination of our records), I'll leave it as it is unless you have another suggestion. I note BOLD Systems 4 shows records of E. accedens from Africa, Thaliand and Australia. Nevertheless an interesting sighting for the ACT.
