Suspect you were unable to see the 'star' because of the small stipe (stem) between the spherical spore bearing section and that star like structure seen in Geastrum species. Not all that unusual for the rays of the star to curl back and under so not so easily seen.
This species has a distinctive beak-like structure through which to spores exit the fungus. as seen in your very clear image.

In the lower right corner you see a dead leaf, Between it and the spore sac there is something that is dirty-whiteish and a little out of focus. I suspect that is part of the star-like base - by now aged and a little weathered.
