What you have is the base, all that's left after the spores have been dispersed. Initially there would have been a more-or-less spherical , powdery mass of spores above the base, encased within a fragile ski. That skin broke up and fell away in patches to expose the spores and allow easy wind dispersal. Before the skin started to break up the whole structure would have been about the size of your fist.
