Trying to ID this plant. found commonly in riparian areas. this specimen was growing next to Japanese Honeysuckle.

Leaves of this species have a strong peppery taste.
Other species of knotweeds, with similar form and similar appearance but with pink buds/flowers, do not have this peppery taste.
