It isn't calotis, but I can't help you beyond that. It could be a misplaced Australian native, but there are weedy species that look like this also

Are you sure Michael? I'm a bit concerned about how large this plant is, I've never seem C.apiculatum as such an enormous mat.

From the habit it seems like a green form of Chrysocephalum semipapposum. I can add some photos as a new sighting if that helps. I did not see any other plants like this.
