These ants were fairly distinctive with a large white V on top of abdomen.
Are they feeding on insects on E. cinerea?

Hi Peter, these are probably the species Dolichoderus scabridus given the location, but I can't be sure from the photo. They would likely be feeding on honeydew from scale insects or similar. The white V you see on the abdomen isn't really there - the downy hairs on the abdomen reflect the light in a pattern like that when you view them in the right position. Cheers, Jon

Thanks John. That is all very helpful. I'm so impressed with my recent exposure to CNM, and the excellent job the moderators are doing. Sometimes I worry that Tapirlord never sleeps!
