Did you notice an outer covering over the sporethecia (rounded heads)? Was there and iridescence evident? It appears to be a myxo but could belong to one of two genus. More detailed written description required to assist with identification. Two very nice finds.
no iridescence evident, and no outer covering. sometime next week I'll return to where I found them, and see if there are any more. Is there anything special I should be taking note of (with simply my poor eyes and a decent magnifying glass)? The slime moulds I found this week are my first, after hoping to find some for about 2 years, so I'm not too concerned about precise ID, just happy to have found them!
Great, they start to become very addictive now. Often, its possible to find them in all stages of development at this time of year. Just take note of everything you possibly can and try to get the closest and clearest pictures possible. If you are on private land and have permission, you could collect small specimens for examination at the herbarium and learn more about these gorgeous critters at home yourself.
