Significant sighting

Tapirlord noted:

20 Dec 2023

Rare, cryptic, and incredibly difficult to find even if you know what you are looking for. This is a fantastic sighting and an outlying population.

User's notes

Swamp, South East Forests NP, with Empodisma minus and Asperula gunnii

Hard to be sure from the photos, but looks more like Corunastylis formosa than C turfosa. Would make more sense on range too. I saw 30+ C formosa in the same area a couple of days ago.

Thanks Tobias, I've submitted it to the herbarium so will see what they come back with. Thought turfosa with a 10x lens in motel light!

Thanks Tobias, now that you say it C.formosa does make more sense particularly at this site. I'll undo the ID and await confirmation from the herbarium.

Hi Tobias and Tapirlord, Mark Clements at the CSIRO Herbarium has confirmed this as Corunostylis turfosa! He has also confirmed our Thelymitra alpicola record from nearby (same swamp from memory) so there is a relationship between orchids in this swamp and those in KNP (noting that T alpicola has also been recorded from the Clyde). Thanks, Rob

It's possible they are both there too? It's pretty common to find several Corunostylis at the one site, although I'm less sure of this in swampy habitats

I will maintain the record as C.turfosa then on Mark's advice. Very interesting!
