User's notes

Ignore the plant in the photo, the catapillar was placed on that just for convenience to photo, it was actually feeding on a young mountain pepperberry plant.

@GirtsO : nice photo. The double rings between the segments are unusual. I cannot see if it has 2 or has 3 pairs of prolegs. Could you tell, or can you take a photo clarifying that, which will let us determine its family?

I have a photo of it lying on the ground playing dead, not sure if it will answer the question or not. I have not seen one of these before.

there are 3 little bumps on the left hand end where it is gripping the stem - so I think the answer is 3

All caterpillars have 3 pairs of true legs under the thorax, but different moth families have a different number of prolegs under the abdomen.

OK, my lack of entomology knowledge is profound...

@GirtsO : please can you add the photo of the caterpillar on the ground to this sighting ?

The caterpillars of about 93% of Australian moth species are not known, so usually to find the species of a caterpillar you need to rear it to the adult moth. Please can you do this in future if you if encounter another one?
