Today I found out that it had exited the pupae, though died shortly afterwards. It appears that it was not a Moth but rather a Butterfly of the genus Heteronympha, most likely Heteronympha merope.

Birdy, have moved this sighting over to Butterflies - was tucked away in 'Noctuidae unclassified IMMATURE moth' section. Your suggestion is correct, caterpillar and pupa are H. merope.
