I went back the next day and the gardeners had weeded the school gardens and pulled this onion orchid out. I found it lying on the ground complete with exposed tuber. So have taken it home and trying to transplant it into garden. 99% certain it will die.

Might be ok, Microtis are pretty hardy. I've collected this genus from roadside verges and had good success with them in pots.
