Did it have paired thorns. Pods are right shape but a bit pale for Robinia. Were the trees planted or invasive or do the numbers refer to suckers?

Yes, paired thorns, though not on many branches. 'Pale' pods are last year's crop - new ones from this year's flowering are certainly dark. Trees are in a planted grove on a mown footprint - the few suckers are being minimised by that.
