@RogerF I think this might be Schizobothrus flavovittatus rather than Caledia. Could you have a second look for me? I'm basing this on eye pattern, the shape and pattern (or lack of) of the pronotum, and the back patterning. Cheers, Trevor
Thanks Roger. The nymphs certainly get confusing. And it's almost impossible to get these subtleties from books. I don't suppose you have considered writing a book of ACT grasshoppers?
I did start making a list of ACT species and how to identify them but the lack of useful keys to genera like Goniaea and Austroicetes made it all too difficult.. Do you have a copy of Rentz et al.?
@RogerF @trevorpreston Yeah, I've been trying to find something online that is useful for showing the nymphs etc. as grasshoppers completely confuse me! Is it worth outlaying the over $200 I'm finding for Rentz's guide to grasshoppers when I search for that book online?
I have one, you can get it from Nokomis books online. It is limited in its treatment of nymphs, although some species are documented very well. At any rate, an excellent purchase
As you will see from the Rentz guide you often need multiple photos of a range of body parts to get an exact ID unless you collect a specimen. The pictures of nymphs are from lab reared specimens from identified adults that laid eggs in captivity.
