Thanks for this sighting lbradley. How accurate do you think your location is, as this seems to be a new location for a plant of this ver rare species within Franklin Grasslands
The location is about right. I was helping Margaret Ning and co at the seed raising beds and we walked out with a ranger to see some weird burrows - too small for rabbits. Maybe lizards. We encountered the Peppercress when we were walking around. Margaret and Matt (FoG) identified it.
Now that would be super cool! But, a few things to keep in mind. Smart phone GPS gets it wrong and does so frequently, I map almost exclusively off my smart phone and find that at least 2-3 sightings won't geotag at all and there will be at least another 5-6 that will need manuel correction (sometimes quite significantly). I typically upload about 60 sightings at a time so that's lends itself to just under a 1/6 error rate.
Lisa looking at the minimap does the location look ok to you? To me it appears just on the edge of a slight rise in a more exposed rocky area which could be suitable habitat. However I do note that having been to this reserve a few times myself, most of the central portion is occupied by invasive phalaris including much of that little hill. The location is currently places it within the phalaris but I'm thinking if it is relatively accruate then the plants are mostly likely rocky area nearby which would make sense. Smart phone GPS will only measure to a maximum accuracy of 5m anyhow.
I’m not sure what you mean. They both told my it was Peppercress and endangered. Yes, Margaret could definitely clarify the location. She knows that Reserve very well!
Oh, just in the sense that we are talking about this site potentially being a new location. We know there are sites of this species throughout this reserve, but are unsure if it has been recorded at this particular location. I was just wondering whether Margaret thought this site was of significance at the time.
This hasn’t come up as a significant sighting - ie, I only have one significant sighting under the area that gives number of confirmed, inconclusive and significant sightings. It doesn’t seem to automatically increment when a new significant sighting is added. I want credit for e. albens too please. 😊
I haven't marked it as a significant sighting as of yet, I'm unsure if its a new location or not. Once we're sure I'm happy to mark it and it will move into your "significant sightings". Sorry to say that the E.albens isn't a naturally occuring tree so not of significance.
Repeats are good to get in that they provide a level of monitoring over years, while non local natives could be significant if they were a new incursion of a high risk weed species. A significant sighting is more an opinion of a moderator rather than conforming to set criteria.
