User's notes

Last year I found a rotting tree limb in my Canberra garden and drilled a number of holes in it hoping to create a nesting environment for some Megachile bees that had been in the area. It worked, at least one hole was filled over successive visits by a Megachile (Hackeriapis) oblonga. This year however, it seems multiple Megachile (Hackeriapis) oblonga have decided that the rotting branch is better suited for providing fibrous material for nesting in the commercial bee hotel. Interesting to watch them fly into the log, do some mining, exit with mandibles grasping a bundle of fibres, and then fly back to the bamboo tubes.
