Ciaran,

I'm trying to respond to your suggestion of E. pallidflorum but your comment hasn't come through here, only as an e-mail alert (but no e-mail) (I am having trouble with CNM and e-mails: none are coming through).

I will go back and collect a specimen for Herbarium, and do some measurements of sepals, petals and leaves.

There are characteristics consistent with either/both species like linear leaf shape: but glabrous leaves, widely-spaced teeth on margins, and sepal shape are consistent with E.pallidiflorum. Petal colour, overall height (over 2 m), and purple petal colour is consistent with E. hirsutum.

The area is rich in introduced aquatic /amphibious species (a relict of its early settlement) so E. hirsutum would not be a surprise: however, if it is E. pallidiflorum then it shows that disturbed and modified habitats shouldn't be discounted.

Hi Jane, no worries there. I've sent you an email which should help clear things up.

Ken recorded Sparganium subglobosum from this area in 2015, so clearly there are some interesting things to be discovered.
