That looks like a long dead cocoon. Why did you think it was alive? Was one or both ends open?

One end was attached, the other not open. I gave it a wiggle and it didn't fall off. I have never seen such a large one, perhaps it was dead.

I do not know any macro-moths that make an exposed cocoon like that. Can you cut it open carefully with, say, a pair of nail scissors to see if there is a pupa inside ?

I didn't collect it and doubt I could find it again. Even if I did, I would be reluctant to cut it open, sorry.
