Can you look at a strand under a microscope to see if it is recognisable? Maybe burn a strand and check if it smells artificial?

There was only one larva so I left it. A long way to go and find it again.

I have cropped and enlarged one photo. It doesn't look like artificial fibre.

I gather that the hairs are from the leaves of Great Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)

Hairs from Verbascum thapsus. See Heliocosma argyroleuca (A tortrix or leafroller moth) for example of larva using Verbascum and other plant material.
