User's notes

The wet summer seems to have contributed to scale insects appearing on eucalypts in plague proportions. This sequence of images provides some detail of the complex structures some scale insects make for protection. The first image shows a hollow hemispherical structure which was firmly fixed to a eucalyptus leaf, with an orange-coloured scale insect inside. The structure was around 5mm in diameter. The second image shows two other similar structures with their intricate forms. These were solid to the touch. The third and fourth images show the tiny scale insect which was within the first structure. The final image shows the first structure on its side, displaying the inside of the hollow hemisphere within which these insects live.
