Upperwing markings look like a Meadow Argus to me - a very crumpled and odd looking one.

Thanks, that's what I thought after checking Suzi Bond's book, but I'm an absolute amateur. And yes about the 'crumpled and odd' - it barely moved even though I was very close for a while. Maybe it was near the end of its life.
