Prominent spine suggests a hawk moth larvae. There is a a photo of first instar Hippotion scrofa larvae on LBH with prominent black spines which, given its our most commonly seen local species, it may be an early instar of that species. I stand to be corrected though.

Thanks for the ID, Michael. Gosh, Lophyrotoma interrupta - a nasty little brute. Does anyone know of any instances of this causing cattle poisoning in the Canberra area?
