Actually, I think most flower visiting brachycerid flies are after the pollen rather than the nectar as their mouthparts are more suited to sweeping up particulate matter, Pollen is also a more complete food than nectar (energy). In some blood and body fluid feeders the piercing mouthparts are connected to a pharyngeal pump enabling them to suck up nectar eg male mosquitos, bee flies, empidids etc.
