I'm suggesting this ID solely because of its similarity to two or three other observations classified as such which look similar to this specimen., see particularly CNM Sighting Nos. 4375149 and 4386258. The association with a pupa and a Waratah bud is most valuable information, however I myself cannot say that that association sheds light on the identification of the species. Looks similar to some specimens of M. laganodes (e;g on the ALA) although I'm not sure its that species.
Thanks, you’re right they do look to be a good match. I originally suggested Curved-horned moths as I felt it might be related to the known moth that infests waratah buds despite them looking quite different https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/286830/Improved-on-farm-management-of-Waratah-bud-and-stem-borer.pdf
