User's notes

Flower stalk is 34cm high, leaf is 30cm long and 5mm wide. Using the usual features I can't find a species that matches and especially the post-anther lobe without yellow tips seems puzzling. This specimen popped up in our vegiepatch and never flowered for about 5 years. Thinking it might get too much water/nutrients I transplanted it to a pot last autumn.

Hi Maartje, I've forwarded this to Lachlan Copeland and he agree its looks pretty interesting, and similar to plants he's seen on the central coast which are along the lines of angustifolia. Can you post a photo of the leaf to be able to rule out brevifolia?

Hi Tobias, I tried to add some pictures but that didn't work so some photos of the leaf
Thelymitra sp. aff. cyanapicata (Blue Top Sun-orchid)

Are those clear enough?

A rather unsatisfying end, no doubt an unusual one but hard to be sure!

Tobias, with the lack of any yellow at top of column and the purple colour had you considered T. sp. aff. cyanapicata? Leaf channelled?

Hi Derek, I did come across that one as the only T. without yellow apex but it seems to have very convergent arms whereas this one has almost divergent arms. Not sure how critical that is...

Yeah that's a good point on the column arms Maartje.

After a chat to Derek, and with similar plants being recorded around Canberra, it makes to be consistent and call these all Thelymitra sp. aff. cyanapicata, given the dark post anther lobe and thin channelled leaf. See recent sighting for example Thelymitra sp. aff. cyanapicata (Blue Top Sun-orchid)

Going through the recent guide to orchids of NSW and ACT I noticed T. sp.aff. atronitida which seems like a definite option for this specimen? The hood was much more glossy purple/blackish than blue. What would are your thoughts?
