Possibly butterfly larve, on euc blakelyi

They store and concentrate the eucalyptus sap in their gut and spit (actually dribble) when they are threatened - so you obviously treated them softly. Gang=gangs have learnt to remove the stomach and dine on the rest of the flesh.
