Looks like a species of Amanita that is well past its prime. I assume that by nodules you mean the whitish spots on the cap (but correct me if I've misunderstood you). Those are the remnants of what was a membranous envelope around the whole mushroom while it was still much smaller and in the button stage - before the stem and cap expanded.

Thanks for the information. Yes, I did mean the white spots. I know there are Amanita phalloides and A mascaria in this park so it could well be one of that species.

Given the colour I had wondered about a washed out Amanita muscaria, and since you've seen it there before I'll go with that. Amanita phalloides may, for a while, keep some larger pieces of adhering tissue on the cap, but not the numerous small fragments that you see on muscaria.
