Abantiades atripalpis larvae live in tunnels in the ground feeding on roots, and pupate in their tunnel, and then for the moth to emerge, they half extrude the pupal skin from the hole in ground where they lived. Many other moth species pupate in the soil, many others in the crannies, and many others in rolled leaves.

Do you think the pupa was fixed at the rear to the leaf, or was it just lying loose? It fixed, do you know the plant? How long was the pupa?
