Crawling across the path. I rolled it over, and it appeared to lay an egg. When i rolled it back it stayed slightly curled up, not moving.

It is likely to be a foul smelling chemical droplet as a predation defence

Ah, thanks Michael, well it stayed as a droplet, and I did not smell anything. It had me confused though, as I had thought it was probably a beetle larva, so egg did not quite fit the scenario.
