Males are about 1/8th the size of the female and they are freeloaders off the female. There may be multiple males bulging in her web. see record Trichonephila edulis (Golden orb weaver)

She also has to deal with klepto-parasitic spiders who hang in the vicinity of her web and steal stuff from it. look out for the teardrop spider,
