These images show very well two of the features ('characters') that characterise Water Scavenger Beetles of the family Hydrophilidae: the form of the antennae and maxillary palps. One antenna sits vertically, with the three lumpy-looking terminal segments looking grey in colour because of a coating of fine hairs. The pair of thin reddish-brown organs from the head are the maxillary palps which, very unusually among beetles, are longer than the antennae and might easily be mistaken for them.
