I've suggested Iridomyrmex purpureus only so Jon Lewis can have a look. He might know the gall insect.

I think you are right about the ID, Michael, but I don't know what would have caused the gall or why the ants would be interested in it - galls are not normally a source of food. Cheers, Jon
