@JonLewis is there enough to go on here? Sorry, I am a complete newby to photography, I am sure these will get better over time as I learn... This guy seemed mostly solitary (maybe one other like it in the hour or so I was out there) and it seemed to jump too...

Hi Jubeyjubes, I think this is actually a velvet ant, who much is a type of wingless wasp. Take a look at; Ephutomorpha sp. (genus) (Mutillid wasp or Velvet ant)
