Several of these caterpillars were excavating holes in which to pupate despite a temperature of 6C at the time this image was taken.

Michael, do the caterpillars block the entrance to the hole once they are in residence?

I've watched and videoed these excavating to completion and seen no evidence that they then block the entrance, though perhaps I didn't wait long enough.
