Oh: and what is the plant family of tree? There are 2 species of Chelepteryx, that have differing foodplants, and have cocoons with differing degrees of nastiness.
And how long were the cocoons? C. collesi is nearly half as big again as C. chalepteryx.
Don - Yes, the cocoons had sharp rusty brown hairs, the sort that get into your skin - you can see them more clearly in photo 3. I measured the cocoons properly today, each 11cm long. The tree is a Eucalyptus Cinerea. Thanks, Jacky
