This was quite unusual and I'm not sure what was going on. The echidna was happily feeding, but after a while it paused and appeared to rest its beak on a rock (photo 2). It then raised its beak in the air, maybe to sniff my scent, but its eyes were closed, and it held the position for a short yet reasonable length of time. It then repeated the process.
