Why are the images being cropped upon submission? is this a female?

The rectangular enlargements are not cropped,
only the thumbnails to make them square.
To determine its sex, we must first determine the species.
It looks like Targalla sp. (Eutelliinae), but I can find none that occur in ACT.

Its a mainly northern species, but ANIC has a few NSW records. The closest is Bundanoon. The moth is a male.

Further to the cropping question. my image 4250621 is certainly cropped. is the there a pixel dimension that should be used?

How odd. I see the full moth well clear of the boundaries in the main image.

i accept that the thumbnails can/may be cropped, the image for this submission is not cropped but as indicated before, image 4250621 is certainly cropped.

If my window is too narrow, CNM displays the square cropped thumbnails of images 2 or 3, instead of image 1.
I find that clicking on either of the cropped thumbnails gives me uncropped images of Nos. 2 and 3.

One contributer asked me about cropping recently and I checked with Michael B. If an image is particularly elongated in one dimension, it will be made more square in the CNM loading process, possibly cropping the moth. Reloading a squarer image removes this effect. (I'm not sure how relevant this is to the discussion here.)

I always crop my photos to a square template before posting which avoids the problem.

Thanks to Glenn and Ian for your comments re the submitting format. In future I will submit my images with a square format.
