The ID is from Chris Cargill, who wonders what is starting to show towards the upper right (the small dark green spots) and adds: "Can you ask them to keep an eye on the bryophytes around that farm dam. All sorts of things may pop up!" However, I can't say how many will be identifiable from photos.
Ok. But I am intrigued as to why THIS former dam ? out of the several that I keep an eye on, this is the only one with bryophytes. What habitat or micro-habitat conditions favour bryophytes ?
There is no simple answer since some bryophytes will need a certain combination of conditions (e.g. moisture, light levels, substrate chemistry/texture) while others will need a different set of conditions – and there is always the factor of chance when it comes to where spores or asexual propagules land.
